I just find it funny that this is so exact to the Japanese, haha.

“Yabe” (やべ) sets up Kakeru’s character much better than the “Whoa” that English could use. It’s closer to “holy shit”.

This is a really nice way to use an em dash for that.

English is doing a good job trying to set up Canon’s character where the language allows. But this is as good as it could get.

This is the first reveal that Kakeru has the っす (-su) tail speaking habit (口調/kuchou) instead of desu (です). It is completely lost in English for the entire story. It is one of the tropes you assign to this sort of character in anime. It also works with girls and makes them feel more mischievous.

In the GCFP reveal stream, when they play tested the scenario scene, the chat box promptly noted the っす tail.

Good job getting ehehe exactly, but they can’t exactly emulate how Canon says I’m fine in this way : だいじょーぶ (大丈夫 / daijoubu), in all hiragana and with ー to sound maximum cutesy. I think Canon as a whole loses the most in translation because English cannot convey the “hiragana expression”, though I appreciate that they tried.

She also says “Peace!” (ピース！) here and you can imagine she’s making a V hand sign, but it is lost in English.

Canon is Kyanon (キャノン) in Japanese, and her short form, still polite enough to be used by higher-ups like Fwuff, is Kyano-san (キャノさん) with the “n” ン removed.

I get why it became Cannie, because they needed something that isn’t exactly Canon. But with no honorific in English, it sounds friendlier than intended. You wouldn’t think a club advisor would call their member like a friend like this. But Kyano-san works because of the “san”, and Kyano alone would not work as a shortened name either.

The English one is taking liberty with the joke here, as it couldn’t exactly translate how Fwuff is trying to say “gomennasai”.

English needs to use “my”, but how Fwuff uses “boku” (僕) for himself sets him up as a sort of superior-but-kinda-inferior character you could mess with if you wanted to. At least I immediately felt that way from this sentence.

Canon also uses “sense-” (せんせー) in hiragana with the ー and not “sensei” (先生), as said earlier. This sentence shows that she doesn’t switch mode even when speaking to her superior, also indirectly showing the friendly relationship between the two.

Watashi わたし is also all in hiragana, and the “damon” ending (だもんっ。) completely sets up her character in a short time. This is the point where I feel like English players are surely not getting the full worth of the game’s price, even before I come to check the English side…

“Mr. Fwuff” is revealing the name ahead of the Japanese text.

In Japanese she doesn’t outright declare that she won’t be able to compete, she says it’ll be hard to compete like this, and sounds more reluctant. I like the Japanese version more. It shows she is still determined to compete no matter what.

Fwuff addresses Yoh as Yoh-kun. It matches how he uses Kyano-san.

“Buchou”（部長） will be used throughout the story, as there is a head of the club in every school. I’m not sure if “captain” sounds more like the head of the team and not the club? The Japanese one has 部, meaning club, built in.

Canon uses the cute form of buchou ぶちょー consistently when talking to Yoh. Canon only uses the real 部長 when talking about another school’s head of the club. I like this a lot. English players are missing out.

I think the dots before ! that the Japanese one likes to use make the impressed expression even more impressed, like slowly appreciating the aura.
